Today I offended a someone I admire very much. My apologies were accepted, but the hurt I caused is still there. Something has been lost, and I fear that it can not be found. Why do we cause harm to the ones we love? I think the more I invest in a relationship, the more flaws I reveal to the other, and those flaws are often painful. Sometimes I wish I could just lock myself up in a box, hidden from everyone. Whether it is to protect myself or the people I know, I am not sure.

Renee Varela listens to the heart beating inside of Eric Ford, Jr. that once belonged to her late son, Anthony Varela, who was killed in a vehicle accident when a drunk driver hit him on Aug 8, 2010. Ford was in need of a heart and a kidney at the time of the accident, and received both organs from Anthony Varela after he died.

It has been over 100 degrees for over a month now, and its only getting hotter. We also have a drought. This is all a very real concern, but what keeps coming back to my mind is the drought in Somolia. We, the media, are constantly inward focused. What is happening to us, what temperature it is outside, is what sells, because it is what you, the people, are interested in. Ideally what we, the media, should be doing is bringing attention to a catastrophe that can only be helped by you, the people. Grace is my niece. Apparently she is a big Brad Paisley fan. In case you're like me and have no idea who that could be, it's the guy in the photo above. Why Grace likes him I don't know, but she does, and apparently a lot of other people like him and his music as well. Grace I will be making you a mix CD (do you know what CDs are?), or a set of digital music files to play in sequential order, of my kind of music someday soon. Till then keep on being a Brad Paisley fan.

Logistics

Logistics: the detailed coordination of a complex operation involving many people, facilities, or supplies.

FC Dallas had some issues returning home on a flight from El Salvador, where they played a club team in San Salvador. They returned with less than 24 hours to game time, beginning the game with little sleep and jet lag. In spite of their trip's logistical problems, they won 1-0 over Chivas USA.

Taking this year off school to work as a photography intern has taught me a lot. More than anything else I have realized that shooting pictures is the easy part. The hard part is the logistics. So when I lost my iPhone - well the iPhone belonging to the Dallas Morning News - before the game I nearly lost my head. I am a detail oriented type, and when one detail gets lost, my whole system begins to crash. Thankfully, in part to a helpful photo editor (shout out to Guy Reynolds) and this past year of internship experiences, I kept my head and still got the assignment done. As for the iPhone, I was lucky that a respectable family found the device outside the stadium and met with me to return it before the night's end.

I am not the greatest sports shooter. And I definitely had some rust to knock off as I shot football for the first time since last Fall. This was my favorite shot from the game, but the player with the ball wasn't local, so sports chose some boring photo of a local kid - nature of the business I guess. Maybe next time I'll take good shots of who they want.

Serious about clowning around

At Dallas Children's Medical Center there is a staff of clowns. There objective is noble - to distract patients and their families from their current trials with laughter. I witnessed them tactfully engage a variety of situations with great success. Following these instances they gather to discuss how things went and how they could do better. They are as serious as they are funny. It was a joy and honor to witness what they do.

I photographed this hot yoga class in Dallas for an article on people who embrace the heat down here. The room they "yoga" (?) in is kept at or above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. In this picture is the only guy who was sweating more than me. I was dripping sweat so much that I had to be careful when changing lenses in order to avoid getting moisture in the camera body. Even still this sweaty hot yoga environment was more comfortable than being outdoors in the concrete jungle of Dallas.

A quiet moment

Amongst dozens of kids at a summer camp, this girl found herself a place of seclusion to enjoy her snack and a little alone time. I can relate. All day long I am surrounded by people which makes each day really interesting, but it can be a drain. In the end it is the quiet moments that I enjoy most.

This empowered young girl, yelled for a good hour at the passing cars, calling for support, calling for help. I wasn't convinced that she or any of the other kids really knew what they were supposed to be upset about. What they did know was after this school year eleven of their teachers would be gone and that was enough for them. The small elementary school being affected is in a lower income neighborhood. Many of their teachers being transferred to other local schools and others are being dismissed. School administrators claim its part of a process for improving the school, which has reported behavioral and academic problems in the past. They also revealed that this was part of a series of budget cuts. If you ask me, I think it has more to do with the money. At the last school board meeting opposition to their decisions was hushed, while they considered dumping more money into the educational enhancement programs for other school in the richer part of their district. At this point the school board and other administrative officials have shared no plans for the "lower income" school, but there is a great future for the schools in the rich neighborhood. I wonder how long its going to take this girl to figure that out.

Many have already proclaimed, "print is dead." Print is not dead, and I believe it will always have a place to live and prosper. What is suffering at so many publilcations is quality. In efforts to maintain profits, many newspapers are cutting budgets, cutting staff, cutting the amount of time devoted to investigating a subject, and cutting corners. It's as if these newspapers have proclaimed, "quality is dead."

Lately I have been hearing the song Amazing Grace played in connection with Christmas. It kept striking me as odd because it wasn't a Christmas song to me. But while at a soup kitchen today, I witnessed a man weeping as another prayed with him on Christmas Eve, and suddenly grace had everything to do with Christmas.

This photo is reminiscent of the old roadkill series of photographs I have taken. Unlike the roadkill, this bird suffered a less fortunate death – in my opinion – when it conducted an electrical current over 7000 volts strong. This birds death disrupted a main segment of the local grid causing a breaker to trip in a nearby substation, leaving over 4000 residents or businesses in the area without power for about two hours. Completing a photo essay of a marching band must be some sort of secret rite of passage for newspaper photographers. I see photo pages of bands all the time. So when I was assigned to illustrate a page with photos of this local school band, I wasn't very excited. Since starting the assignment I have realized that I like band "geeks," at least the band geeks I have met. Anyway, I guess I like this assignment too. Thanks Jason.

Ellee and I went exploring together when the assignment board at the paper was strangely empty one Sunday. There was a lot of wind from the Northeast, so we went weather feature hunting, and surf hunting. Not many people were out in the weather, so I thought the lighthouse would make a nice subject. When we got there this is what we found. It is just a pretty picture, but folks at the paper loved it. My mom likes pretty photos too. This post is for her.

We also found 3 to 4 foot waves breaking along the other side of this little lighthouse. It looked like a nice longboard wave. Next time I'll be out on it.

Tom Schmidt is receiving a flu vaccine at this drive thru flu shot event in Sandusky, Ohio, but I doubt anyone will be able to figure that out from this photo. Although, I think this is a cool idea for a portrait of a biker in the future. Steal the concept if you like. I don't know if I'll get around to it. Hint: It would probably help to have some epic sky too.

Every so often I will see an eccentric individual walking along a roadway dressed as Moses or a clown, or carrying a large cross over their shoulder. This time I saw Superman. Like the others I wasn't going to spend the time to photograph them, but my wife, the encourager, convinced me to check this one out. His name is Allen Mullins. I suggest you google this guy. He is a celebrity of sorts. He is taking this radical approach in order to raise awareness of veterans' care following their service to the United States. He may not look serious, but he is. Mullins plans to do this for the next 10 years of his life – he will be 38-years-old by then.

On my last day off, Ellee and I drove along the Lake Erie shore sightseeing and scoping out potential surf spots. Apparently surfers and surf exist up here on the "North Shore." We found this spot in the city of Vermillion, Ohio.

These commandos compete in a game known as HVZ, or Humans Versus Zombies. The humans are armed with Nerf weapons, many of which are modified for better use against their zombie attackers. Once a zombie grabs hold of a human's handkerchief armband, the human becomes a zombie too. Their only hope is to shoot the zombies or run a way. I witnessed a battle last night. It was an awesome experience.
